Association History

What we know now as the Inner West Harbour Cricket Association began its life as the Gladesville & District Junior Cricket Association and was inaugurated on the 25th of July 1923.

The founding teams of the competition were Diggers, East Ryde, Hunters Hill B, Balmain Shopkeepers, Leichhardt, Hunters Hill Juniors, Druids and PAFS.

During the 1938/39 season, the Association took a progressive step when it inaugurated a Saturday morning competition for juniors (under the age of sixteen).  The teams in the initial season were Jolly Boys, Gladesville Juniors, Ryde, Pioneers, Putney and Christ Church.  At the end of season Annual Presentation of Trophies (held at Memorial Hall, Gladesville) the Jolly Boys were presented with their honour caps as our first ever Junior Premiers.

The Association has competed in many years of Junior Representative cricket, with several individual players winning awards in different age groups, but our most successful teams were the CS Watson Shield winners of 1951/52, the “Mighty Tens” who won the Foster Shield in 1980/81, the Arch Cawsey Shield winners in 2018/19 and the Mollie Dive Shield winning team of 2022/23.

Some of our junior players have gone on to greater heights in first class and international cricket, including:

  • Adrian Tucker (New South Wales)

  • Ben Hollyoake (England)

  • Ben Manenti (South Australia)

  • Denise Annetts (Australia)

  • Liam Scott (South Australia)

  • Martha Winch (Australia)

  • Mark Atkinson (Tasmania)

  • Nathan Ashley (Oxford University)
